Table manners
Traditionally people in India eat with their hands. In north India the Roti or naan (flat bread) is
used to scoop the gravy and vegetables and eat it without the gravy touching their fingers. But in South
India you have to let the food touch your hand as there is no bread. Banana leaves are used as
disposable plates. In India it is considered unhygienic and rude to eat with the left hand.Even a left
handed person is expected to eat with the right hand. But in urban areas people eat with spoons and
forks and use a plate.Roti is still eaten with hands. The reason for eating food with hands is
-■ that food tastes more when you eat it that way.The reason is unknown by scientists. But probably it is
something to do with the spoons made of metals ( perhaps, they take away the taste). If you eat with a
wooden spoon it too tastes better but not as much as with hands.
■ that if you eat with the spoon you do not know how hot the food is and you may burn your tongue.
When you eat with your fingers you can perceive whether it is cold enough to be able to eat it.
■ That, it maintains your hygiene to a great extent.Eating with your hands forces you to wash your
hands before doing so . And so your hands remain clean.A spoon or a fork may be dirty even after
washing.
Eating with hand also gives a informal touch to eating.say when we meet someone for formal
business we tend to restrict our natural behavior which is quite uncomfortable and if we eat
it's strictly with spoons. That's why when we eat with our hands we are much more
comfortable 'cause we are much more comfortable moving five fingers rather than controlling
a metal stick(spoon) with the same.
