WHAT WIKIPEDIA SAYS
In
linguistics
, mutual intelligibility is recognized as a relationship between
languages
or dialects in which speakers of different but
related languages can readily understand each other without intentional study or extraordinary effort. It is sometimes used as a
criterion for distinguishing languages from
dialects
, though
sociolinguistic
factors are also important.
In simple words , if two languages are mutually intelligible(spoken form), it means that a speaker of language A can understand very
easily what the speaker of language B is saying without the need to learn the language B.Languages can be mutually intelligible in
written or spoken forms or both. Here is the list of mutually intelligible languages.
Spoken
☺ Hindi (India- Devanagri script) and Urdu (Pakistan- Arabic script)
☺ German (Roman script) and Yiddish (Israeli- Hebrew script)
☺ Thai and Lao
